In February 2024 the Government of the HKSAR issued approximately HK$6 billion-equivalent of two-year digital green bonds in four currencies — HKD, RMB, USD and EUR — marking the first multi-currency digital bond issuance in a single offering. The bonds were issued on HSBC Orion, the bank's tokenisation platform, and cleared through the HKMA's CMU.
Coupons differed across the currency tranches (HKD 3.800%, RMB 2.900%, USD 4.749% and EUR 3.647%). The issuance broadened the investor base relative to the 2023 proof-of-concept and demonstrated repeatable, multi-currency digitally native issuance.
